How Many Fish Can Your Tank Really Hold?

The inch-per-gallon rule is too crude. A welfare guideline based on water volume and adult fish length, and why goldfish need far more room.

Store tanks are crowded with tiny fish, which makes it easy to assume a small tank holds a lot. Many of those fish will grow several times larger, and some need to live in groups.

Key figures

  • 1.5 to 2 liters RSPCA starting water allowance per tropical-fish centimeter
  • 2 liters RSPCA starting water allowance per half-centimeter of goldfish

A guideline that uses real numbers

The RSPCA, the UK animal welfare charity, publishes a stocking guideline based on water volume and the fish’s body length, not counting the tail:

Water needed per centimeter of adult fish length
  • Tropical fish, lower1.5 L per cm
  • Tropical fish, upper2 L per cm
  • Goldfish4 L per cm

RSPCA stocking guideline: 1.5 to 2 liters per cm for tropical fish, and 2 liters per 0.5 cm (4 liters per cm) for goldfish. Body length excludes the tail. A guideline, not a guarantee.

Working it out

  1. Find the adult body length of each species you want.
  2. Add up the total length of the fish you plan to keep.
  3. Multiply by 1.5 to 2 liters for tropical fish, or 4 for goldfish.
  4. Compare with the real water volume, which is less than the tank’s rated size once gravel and decorations are in.

One US gallon is about 3.8 liters.

Beyond the numbers

  • Schooling fish should be kept in groups, so plan for the whole group.
  • Territorial fish need room to claim space.
  • Active swimmers need tank length, not just volume.
  • Bigger tanks are more forgiving. The RSPCA notes larger volumes have more stable temperatures and water conditions.
Stock slowly

Even a correctly sized tank needs fish added a few at a time, so the filter bacteria can keep up with each new arrival.

The community-fish guide covers selecting compatible animals. The aquarium test-kit guide keeps water measurements alongside any stocking decision.

Questions people ask

Is the one inch of fish per gallon rule correct?

It is a rough shortcut that ignores body shape, adult size and behavior. A volume-per-length guideline like the RSPCA's is more realistic.

How many fish can I put in a 10 gallon tank?

Roughly 38 liters of water. At 1.5 to 2 liters per centimeter, that supports about 19 to 25 cm of small tropical fish in total, minus decorations and gravel.

Why do goldfish need so much space?

They grow large and produce a lot of waste. The RSPCA suggests 2 liters for every half centimeter of goldfish.

What happens if a tank is overstocked?

Waste builds faster than the filter can handle, water quality falls, and fish become stressed and sick.
