A professional aquarium maintenance quote can be an hourly rate, a minimum visit charge or a recurring package. Those units produce different bills even when both providers say they clean tanks. The scope also matters: cleaning glass alone is a different service from checking water, preparing replacement water and maintaining the equipment.
The named prices below are the providers’ own published charges, checked in October 2026. They are examples from Chicago and Houston, not a national average or quotes for your tank. Use them to understand the arithmetic and obtain a local offer with the same tasks and visit schedule specified.
Key figures
- $125 Aquatic World standard maintenance per hour
- $75 Fish N Pets Unlimited minimum service visit
- $156.25 Aquatic World bill for 65 chargeable minutes
Hourly rates and visit minimums produce different totals
Aquatic World publishes a $125 standard hourly rate, a one-hour minimum and rounding up to quarter hours. Fish N Pets Unlimited publishes freshwater service starting at a $75 minimum per service, without defining that as an hourly rate on the page. Do not divide its $75 into an assumed visit length and present the result as the shop’s hourly charge.
| Published basis | Worked bill before extras | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Chicago: $125/hour, one-hour minimum | $125 for a 45-minute chargeable visit | Minimum applies |
| Chicago: quarter-hour rounding | $156.25 for 65 chargeable minutes | Rounded to 75 minutes |
| Chicago: 90 chargeable minutes | $187.50 | One and a half hours |
| Houston: minimum $75 per service | Starting at $75 | Final quote can be higher |
| Chicago: out-of-hours emergency | $225 for one billed hour | Different service category |

Clarify when the clock starts. Aquatic World includes 30 minutes of total commute time before further normal billing begins, charges parking to the customer, and starts time at arrival to a difficult-access building. Waiting for an elevator can therefore affect the bill even before the technician reaches the aquarium.
Photos and dimensions help a provider estimate the work. Fish N Pets Unlimited asks for the address, aquarium dimensions, requested date and equipment photographs. Send the tank’s type and condition as well; the volume printed on its box does not explain dense planting, custom plumbing or an overdue cleanup.
Twelve visits are not the same as every four weeks
At $125 for one hour, 12 visits cost $1,500. A visit every four weeks produces 13 visits across 52 weeks and costs $1,625. Every two weeks produces 26 and $3,250; weekly service produces 52 and $6,500. These are schedule calculations, not recommendations for how often a particular aquarium should be serviced.
If each of 12 visits instead requires 90 chargeable minutes, the same rate produces $2,250 annually. That is $750 above the 12-hour example before any change in the travel or supply bill. The estimated duration can matter as much as a modest difference in hourly prices.
For the Houston starting charge, 12 visits at the advertised minimum would total $900. The word minimum matters: larger or more involved tanks can cost more. A $900 illustration should not be used to claim that the provider offers a fixed annual contract at that amount.
Divide the yearly estimate by 12 for a budgeting allowance, but keep the contract’s payment timing. The $3,250 example averages $270.83 monthly. A month with three visits would still generate more service charges than one with two if billing occurs per visit.
Water testing and consumables belong in the scope
Ask which tests are included, whether results are recorded and who receives the record after each visit. A tank that looks clear can still have a water-quality problem. University of Florida IFAS Extension explains that ammonia cannot be detected by appearance or smell; testing is the means of checking it.
List replacement water, conditioner, filter media, salt for a marine system and any plant-care products separately. Some packages include consumables, while others supply labor and bill materials in addition. A sentence saying “full maintenance” does not tell you whether the quoted fee covers these purchases.
Use the water-change volume guide to distinguish a maintenance discussion from a universal water-change percentage. The provider should explain the plan for this tank and what findings would change it. A customer should not buy a larger chemical allowance merely to match another aquarium’s routine.
The aquarium test-kit comparison covers household testing supplies. If the technician uses professional equipment included in the fee, do not also count an imaginary new test kit at every visit. Supplies the household already owns should be recorded once, with replenishment based on use.
Routine service leaves daily responsibilities with someone
A monthly visit does not provide daily feeding or immediate response to a pump failure. State who observes the tank between appointments, how feeding is handled and where an equipment problem is reported. A vacation can require a caretaker in addition to the maintenance contract.
An automatic fish feeder can deliver food but does not inspect the heater, spot leaks or decide whether fish are behaving normally. Paying for both a feeder and professional maintenance is not necessarily duplication: they perform different functions.
Before a visit, provide safe access, information about the equipment and permission boundaries for replacement purchases. An agreed spending threshold prevents a technician from being unable to replace a failed part, but it should also prevent surprise upgrades. Keep optional improvements separate from repairs needed to restore operation.
Emergency rates and access delays need separate allowances
Aquatic World publishes weekday emergency service between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. at $125 per hour, with other times and weekends at $225 per hour. Its page also says phone calls can be billable. The difference is $100 for one billed hour, an 80% increase over the lower rate.
Ask the local provider whether emergency availability is guaranteed, whether a callout minimum applies and whether replacement equipment is stocked or must be ordered. A published rate does not guarantee an immediate visit. Keep the emergency contact and the person authorized to approve spending accessible to any caretaker.
An aquatic veterinarian should assess sick fish when needed. Maintenance staff can check equipment and water within their service role, but a cleaning package or remote photograph does not establish a diagnosis or make medication an automatic expense.
For a hypothetical service invoice, suppose the billed labor is $156.25, parking is $12 and materials are $18. The total is $186.25 before any tax. Only the labor calculation uses the Chicago published rate; parking and materials are assumptions that illustrate why the hourly figure is not the final invoice.
Keep the accepted quote, visit records and receipts. After several appointments, compare the expected hours and supplies with the bills. Updating the aquarium care budget from those records makes the recurring allowance more reliable than repeating a national-looking price range with no defined scope.
Questions people ask
How much is professional aquarium maintenance?
The examples checked here are Chicago's $125/hour with a one-hour minimum and Houston freshwater service starting at a $75 visit minimum. They are local provider prices with different billing units, not one national range.
What does every-two-week service cost at $125?
Twenty-six one-hour visits total $3,250 over 52 weeks, before extras. That averages $270.83 monthly for budgeting, although invoices can vary with the number of visits that month.
Is a short visit billed by the minute?
That depends on the contract. Aquatic World publishes a one-hour minimum and quarter-hour rounding, so its 65-minute chargeable example rounds to 75 minutes and $156.25.
Does a maintenance contract replace a fish sitter?
Not automatically. A periodic cleaning visit does not provide daily observation, feeding or emergency response. Specify those responsibilities separately when arranging travel care.
