Cat owners get used to the sound of a hairball in the night. It is so common that vomiting is often treated as just something cats do. Sometimes it is. Often it is a symptom worth looking into.
When it is probably fine
An adult cat that brings up a hairball occasionally, then eats, plays and acts normally, is usually not in danger. Eating too fast can also cause the odd episode.
When to call the vet
Cornell’s Feline Health Center advises that cats that vomit more often than once per week, or that show signs such as lethargy, weakness, decreased appetite, blood in the vomit, increased thirst, changes in urination or diarrhea, should be evaluated by a veterinarian promptly.
Cornell also says a cat that is lethargic, refuses food for more than a day or two, or has repeated episodes of vomiting or unproductive retching should be seen without delay.
| What you see | What to do |
|---|---|
| Occasional hairball, cat otherwise normal | Monitor; brushing may help |
| Vomiting more than once a week | Book a vet visit |
| Vomiting plus lethargy, no appetite or diarrhea | Vet promptly |
| Blood in vomit, repeated retching, not eating for a day or two | Vet without delay |
| Possible swallowed string, toy or plant | Vet immediately |
Common causes
- Hairballs, especially in long-haired cats
- Eating too fast, or a sudden diet change
- Food sensitivities or inflammatory bowel disease
- Kidney, liver or thyroid disease, more common with age
- Swallowed objects such as string, hair ties or plant material
- Toxins, including lilies and some houseplants
If you see string or thread hanging from a cat’s mouth or rear, do not pull it. It can be wrapped around the intestine. Go to a vet.
The cat veterinary visit guide covers arranging care and sharing observations. The cat insurance guide addresses funding terms separately from the urgency of assessment.
Questions people ask
How often is it normal for a cat to throw up?
Occasional vomiting can happen, but Cornell advises a vet visit for cats vomiting more than once a week.
Are frequent hairballs normal?
Not really. Frequent hairballs can signal a digestive or skin problem. Brushing helps, but mention them to your vet.
Why does my cat throw up right after eating?
Often eating too fast. Smaller meals or a slow-feeder bowl help. If it continues, see a vet.
When is cat vomiting an emergency?
With blood, repeated retching, lethargy, refusal to eat, or a possible swallowed object or toxin.
