A catio budget begins with a secure outdoor enclosure and ends with a usable route between the home and that enclosure. A kit price alone can leave out assembly, a window or flap connection, platforms and weather protection. The finished design also needs a way for a person to enter, clean and recover the cat without leaving an escape route.
The manufacturer examples here were checked in October 2026. They are product starting prices, not an installed national range. The cat behind wire mesh on the cover illustrates containment at a window; it is not a photograph of the Omlet kit or proof that an existing window screen is a safe cat enclosure.
Key figures
- $449 Omlet balcony enclosure, starting price
- $499 Omlet outdoor catio, starting price
- $949 Example: outdoor enclosure, assembly, access and accessories
Published starting prices are $449 and $499
Omlet publishes two different enclosure types in its U.S. selector. Its balcony enclosure starts at $449 and the freestanding outdoor catio at $499. That $50 difference does not mean a balcony installation is automatically $50 cheaper to finish: the supporting surface, available size and connection to the home can change the work.
| Manufacturer example | Published starting price | What the starting price does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Omlet balcony enclosure | From $449 | Suitability for a particular balcony or building |
| Omlet outdoor catio | From $499 | Price of every height, extension or accessory combination |
| Hypothetical outdoor project with $450 extras | $949 total | A contractor quote or a tax-inclusive checkout |
Source note: Omlet’s U.S. Cat Enclosures Selector supplies the two starting prices. The third row is an explicitly hypothetical addition of $200 assembly, $150 access work and $100 accessories to the $499 base.
Select a configuration before comparing it with a carpenter’s estimate. A low enclosure, a walk-in version and a tunnel-connected run are not the same purchase. The starting-price selector does not state that every advertised size and height is available for $499.
Check the cart for the chosen dimensions and color, delivery and any location limits. A promotion that applies to the enclosure may not apply to labor or separately purchased supplies. Keep the base structure on its own line so additions do not get hidden in a single rounded project number.
Dimensions explain what the kit can occupy
Omlet describes its catios as starting at nominal 6 × 6 feet, with expansion in 3-foot sections. A nominal 6 × 6 layout has 36 square feet of footprint; 9 × 9 has 81, a 125% increase. Those calculations compare nominal footprints, not a measured interior floor area or a capacity recommendation for a number of cats.
The product’s dimension drawings distinguish inside space from the anti-tunnel skirt outside it. For the nominal 6 × 6 layout, the drawing lists 5 feet 11 inches on the inner sides and 7 feet 3 inches across the outside. A space just six feet wide can therefore fail to accommodate the full base arrangement even though the size name sounds right.
The tall version lists a center height of 6 feet 8 inches. That describes standing space, not the height of every point or the clearance beneath added shelves. Check the door opening, where roof supports sit, and whether a person can reach the full enclosure for cleaning.
On a balcony, the enclosure dimensions are only part of the decision. Building restrictions, usable exits, attachment rules and load capacity need resolving before an order. A manufacturer’s steel mesh specification does not evaluate the balcony beneath it. If the location cannot take the enclosure, a low product price does not make it a workable project.
Assembly and access can nearly double a base budget
Omlet’s outdoor enclosure arrives flat-packed, with printed instructions and assembly videos; the manufacturer recommends help from another person. Price paid assembly separately if the household cannot build it. Ask whether the quote includes carrying panels to the site, preparing the base and installing the access connection.
Consider the hypothetical $949 example. The enclosure is $499, assembly $200, access work $150 and accessories $100. Extras total $450, or about 90% of the base price. An enclosure-only comparison would miss almost half the total project spending.
If assembly rises from $200 to $350 while the other assumptions stay unchanged, the total becomes $1,099. If an access tunnel costs an assumed $250 instead of the $150 access allowance, that version becomes $1,049. These are sensitivity examples, not published accessory or labor prices. Replace each allowance with the selected manufacturer’s cart or installer quote.
Access may be through a window, cat flap, tunnel or supervised carrying arrangement. Describe who closes the route, how it is secured when unattended and whether a second door creates a protected entry space. Price the final arrangement once, rather than buying a tunnel later because a freestanding run has no route from the house.
Shade and cleaning belong in the design
Humane World for Animals’ catio guidance describes enclosures as a way to provide protected outdoor enrichment. The design should keep the cat contained while providing comfort, access to water and protection from weather. A mesh roof that stops a cat climbing out is different from a cover that supplies shade or sheds rain.
Omlet offers separate covers, tunnels and climbing accessories. Compare their dimensions with the chosen enclosure and ask whether the quoted base includes them. Do not describe a run as ready for every season solely because the mesh is weather-resistant. Sun, wind, drainage and the cat’s route back indoors are separate questions.
Platforms create vertical activity without expanding the footprint, but they can also change recovery and cleaning access. Measure the route an older cat would use to reach and leave a perch. A visually impressive tower is not necessary for every cat, and accessories that remain unused add cost without expanding the animal’s usable space.
The indoor-cat enrichment guide covers options that work inside the home. A catio can add an activity space, but it does not replace interaction, litter care or the rest of the home environment. If there is no workable outdoor location, improving indoor resources is still a concrete choice.
Have an installer or other person competent in the proposed construction assess attachments and the supporting surface. Secure gaps, the roof, access doors and any connection to the building before allowing the cat into the new space.
A quote should state the finished structure and exclusions
For each quote, record the enclosure’s outside dimensions, mesh and frame, roof treatment, base, anchoring, access connection and collection of leftover materials. Ask who supplies the kit and who covers damage or missing parts during assembly. The contractor’s installation warranty and the manufacturer’s product warranty address different work.
A $700 labor-and-materials proposal and a $499 unassembled kit cannot be ranked until their scope is aligned. If the $700 proposal also excludes a hypothetical $200 access connection and $100 cover, its comparable total is $1,000. If the kit needs the $450 extras in the earlier example, it reaches $949. The resulting $51 difference is much smaller than comparing $700 with $499 directly.
That worksheet does not prove which construction is better. It exposes the missing costs so the decision can include repair access, durability and containment. Photograph the finished joints and retain the instructions and invoices; checking latches and damaged mesh remains part of daily care even when a frame needs little finishing work.
For ongoing costs, use the adult-cat care budget. For a cat with reduced jumping or mobility, use the senior-cat access guide when selecting platforms and door routes. An enclosure price answers the building question; the wider care plan answers whether the arrangement can be maintained.
Questions people ask
How much does a catio kit cost?
Omlet's U.S. selector lists its outdoor catio from $499 and balcony enclosure from $449. Select dimensions and accessories to obtain the price of the configuration; these are not installed totals.
Will a 6 × 6 catio fit a six-foot-wide space?
Not necessarily. Omlet's drawing for that nominal size shows an outside base span of 7 feet 3 inches and inner sides of 5 feet 11 inches. Check outside dimensions and door clearance.
Does the base price include a tunnel to the house?
Do not assume so. The manufacturer offers tunnels and other access accessories separately. Price the chosen connection and any window or flap work in the project estimate.
Is mesh enough protection from rain and heat?
Mesh containment and weather cover have different jobs. Include shade, drainage, water and a route back indoors in the design instead of relying on the enclosure name.
