Why Your Cat Pees Outside the Litter Box

Medical problems, a box the cat dislikes, or stress. How to work through the causes in the right order, starting with the vet visit most owners skip.

Few things strain the bond with a cat like finding urine on the bed or the rug. It feels like spite. It almost never is. Cats go outside the box because something about their body, the box or their surroundings is not right.

Step 1: rule out medical causes

Cornell’s Feline Health Center says any medical condition that interferes with normal urination or defecation can cause litter box problems. It names:

  • Urinary tract inflammation, which makes urinating painful and urgent
  • Kidney disease, thyroid disease and diabetes, which make cats drink and urinate more
  • Arthritis, which makes stairs and high-sided boxes painful

Cornell advises a full vet exam and appropriate tests once you know which cat is soiling.

Male cat straining? Go now

A male cat squatting repeatedly and passing little or no urine may have a blocked urethra, which is a same-day emergency.

Step 2: look at the box through the cat’s eyes

Step 3: consider stress

New pets, new people, moving furniture, or cats outside the window can trigger urine marking. Spraying on vertical surfaces is usually marking rather than a toileting problem.

Clean up properly

  1. Blot, do not rub.
  2. Use an enzyme cleaner made for pet urine. Ordinary cleaners leave odor cats can still smell.
  3. Avoid ammonia-based products, which smell like urine to cats.
  4. Never punish the cat. It adds stress and makes the problem worse.

The litter material guide addresses one environmental variable. The box number and placement guide addresses another, while medical assessment remains separate.

Questions people ask

Why did my cat suddenly start peeing outside the box?

A sudden change often points to a medical problem such as urinary inflammation. See a vet before changing the setup.

Is my cat peeing on the bed out of spite?

No. Cats avoid the box because of pain, a box they dislike, or stress, not revenge.

What is the difference between spraying and peeing?

Spraying is usually a small amount on a vertical surface, a form of marking. Peeing outside the box is usually a larger amount on a flat surface.

What cleans cat urine best?

An enzyme cleaner designed for pet urine, which breaks down the compounds that keep drawing the cat back.
